Having started to be grown in the Mediterranean Region in 1990s, today tomato is one of our most important vegetables. As a tomato producer, Turkey takes the third place in the world. Tomatoes are cultivated to a great extent in the Aegean, Marmara and Mediterranean Regions. They are grown for both industrial use, such as tomato paste, cans and comsumption as table vegetable. Turkey has a very well developed tomato processing industry and it ranks fourth in world tomato paste export. The Marmara and Aegean Regions are specialized in this sector. There are early(spring-summer) and autumn(fall-winter) varieties of table tomatoes, which are cultivated both in open and protected areas. The production of cherry tomatoes and vine-ripe tomatoes has been expanded recently because of their increasingly use in some salads and meals.

Apart from domestic market, pepper has been recently exported to the Central and North European countries. It places fourth in the world pepper export. Peppers are generally cultivated in the Mediterranean Region and intensively produced in Antalya, Bursa, Mersin, Hatay ve Samsun. Most pepper varieties grown in and exported from Turkey are improved F1 seeds but other varieties are also used for pepper production. The main varieties can be classified as; charliston, big red pepper, sivri pepper, dolma pepper, conic pepper.
